"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night" -Joshua 1:8
You probably saw this one coming! We've talked about really praying when we pray and truly giving worship to God when we worship. So, it would seem fitting that we make mention of our need to really be in God's Word when we are in God's Word.
We've all been there, haven't we? You read an entire chapter of Scripture before you realize that you have no clue what you were reading. Yep, familiar territory, right? How we overcome this? Let me ask you one simple question - when you open up God's Word, do you have a piece of paper and a pen next to you?
What does this have to do with anything? Well, if someone really important to you said that they needed to give you important instructions about something, would you trust your memory, or would you want to right it all down? I, for one, get nervous at a restaurant when the waiter tries to be impressive and not write down the order. It never fails - when the food comes, something is wrong. Just write it down, man!
When you open the Bible, are you just trying to fulfill a duty and check something off your to-do list? Or are you listening to the instructions that the God of the universe has for you? Do you think you might want to write down what He has to say?
Do you expect to hear from God when you read His Word? If the answer is no, why are you reading it? If the answer is yes, why would you not want to write down what He says so that you can review it, pray over it, and ensure that you are applying it?
Justin Peters has said, "If you want to hear from God, read the Bible. If you want to hear from God audibly, read the Bible out loud." He is speaking to you through His Word, are you really listening?
